What is the Jeepney?

Jeepney is a member of the International Network of Street Papers, which is a global engine for local poverty solutions across the world.  It connects and supports nearly 100 street paper projects in 40 countries, to create employment for homeless people.  www.street-papers.org.

Street papers are a new idea in Asia.  They have proven themselves in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Australia, as a viable method of poverty alleviation.  Jeepney is the first street paper among Asian’s developing countries. Governments the world over, including the United Nations, have recognized “street papers” as an effective way, to reintegrate, homeless people and those trapped in drug and alcohol addictions back into society.

Jeepney is published by Urban Opportunities for Change Foundation, Inc., a non-stock foundation.  Many of our staff including our Executive Director, Design Director and photojournalist, are unpaid volunteers.  This is a social enterprise for the poor.

Jobs give to society what a dole out never can:  including responsibility and enterprise. We are actively recruiting homeless and jobless people to give them their first job with dignity. Street Papers are incredibly successful projects in the world.  They create a market different from any other market.

We are advocates for the poor in practical ways.
